The Ministry of Works is charged with the responsibility of Public Works, including the Construction and Maintenance of State Government Urban and Rural Roads, Bridges and Drainages. The Ministry is also tasked with the duty of Sewage and Drainage Control.
It is also responsible for the, supervision, certification, monitoring, maintenance and regulation of all government projects relating to Civil Engineering works. These include: Road Construction, Bridges, Flood Control System and Erosion Control facilities.
These functions are carried out by the various Departments of the Ministry namely: Highways, Urban and Rural roads, Road Maintenance: Drainage and Sewerages.
In this regard, the Ministry’s main objective is to provide an effective sustainable road network to enhance effective sustainable road network to enhance effective transportation and communication state wide.
Since the inception of the first civilian administration in the State, the Ministry of Works has over the years maintained policy continuity through the transformation of urban centres, by providing good road networks that will enhance effective flow of human and material traffic as well as enhance social, political and economic development.
The Ministry has also integrated the remote rural and riverine communities to the urban centres through the construction of bridges.
Within these periods, it has also provided effective drainage system that will protect roads, enhance de-flooding in the riverine and coastal communities, construction of jetties to facilitate riverine communication.
However, the year 2007 brought a complete revolution of the Ministry’s policies as it relates to infrastructural development, through the massive construction of good road network, the dualization of the Asaba-Ughelli highway and the Asaba International Airport project. The Ministry has also within this period embarked on providing street lights for roads and major streets within Asaba and Warri metropolis.
This administration has not only maintained continuity in infrastructural development, it has taken it a step further by embarking on hugh capital projects aimed at enhancing socio-economic development and transforming the lives of its citizens.
