Ministry of Energy

ENERGY

The Ministry of Energy is charged with the responsibility of Energy Policies in the state. It is also tasked with the duty of Urban and Rural Electrification. The Ministry also undertakes the duty of electric power supply and engineering services. It was created to address the energy paradox in Delta State as a leading producer of energy resources (oil and gas) in Nigeria.
As part of its main policy plan, the ministry is committed to increasing access to modern household fuels as well as the deployment of renewable energy systems such as solar systems and biogas energy. The ministry is currently in collaboration with a lot of partners to enhance the usability of its resources for the Delta state people.
The ministry’s projects are meant to impact the people at the community, state and national levels in Nigeria. It is designed to be beneficial across several sections of the society both in the urban and rural areas, with a focus on moving people in various socio-economic levels up the energy ladder thereby improving the energy system of the state.

PROJECTS
Some of our on-going projects include the following:-
1. Electric Power Generation
2. Domestic Power Supply i.e. Purchase of 262 Transformers
3. Solar Powered Streetlights
4. Wind Energy Development

ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION
Independent Power Project (IPP)
The Delta State IPP project is located at Oghareki. It is divided into the following four segments:
Segment I: This segment is centred on electric power generation from Combined Cycle Gas Turbines. This involved the acquisition and installation of 2 Open Cycle Rolls Royce Trent 64MVA (Phase IV) Gas Turbines and 29 64MVA brush generators capable of generating 100MW of electricity.
Segment ll: This segment involves the construction of a 132kV double circuit, 12 conductor transmission line from the IPP Plant at Oghareki to the 132/33kvtransmission substation at Amukpe.
Segment lll: The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has granted a provisional approval for this segment which entails the fabrication, supply and installation of 132/32kV line Bay Switching Substation
Segment IV: This part of the project involves the construction of a Gas Receiving Pipeline and Station for the State IPP project at Oghareki.

DOMESTIC POWER SUPPLY - PURCHASE OF 262 TRANSFORMERS
A total of 262 transformers have been ordered and will be supplied by world renowned Siemens in Austria. At present, the first batch of transformers comprising of 100 300kVA, 11/0.415kV units; and 30 500kVA, 11/0.415kV units have been shipped into Nigeria. Another 100 300kVA, 11/0.415kV units; 20 500kVA, 11/0.415kV; and 2 2.5MVA, 33/11kV transformers ready for shipping while the remaining 19 7.5MVA (22/11kV) transformers are still under construction.

SOLAR POWERED STREETLIGHTS
The ministry has embarked on the installation of solar powered streetlights in various communities across the senatorial districts of the state to complement the conventional streetlights. A solar mapping of the state is about to be carried out to aid the design of effective solar energy schemes. In the last five years, the ministry of energy has consolidated on the gains of previous administrations by increasing the number of the solar powered streetlights installed in the state from 2,350 to a current total of 8,000 units.
Maintenance contracts are also now in place for solar streetlights installed at various locations in the state with priority given to areas reported by members of the public as needing immediate repairs.

WIND ENERGY DEVELOPMENT
This is a relatively new project embarked upon by the Ministry of Energy in a bid to provide feasible alternatives to the use of fossil fuels. It is based on harnessing the wind as a renewable energy source.
The recently completed first phase of the project involved performing a Wind Resources Assessment of Delta State. The study involved wind mapping, satellite data acquisition, and technical evaluation of the feasible project sites.
