 The Delta State Ministry of Commerce and Industry is charged with the broad mandate of initiating, developing and implementing both industrial and commercial policies.

Some of the responsibilities that fall under the purview of the ministry include:
• Overseeing the activities of Cooperatives, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.
• Coordination of exports, imports and other commercial activities in the state.
• Mobilization and Co-ordination of both the public and private sectors.
• Support of major manufacturing and services oriented industries
• Devising and advising on activities designed to lead to rapid industrial growth of the state

The essence of the ministry is to provide employment opportunities, enhance the standard of living and improve the economic prosperity of citizens. Recently the ministry has also been charged with diversifying the economy from oil-dependency to one that is industry-driven, private sector focused while enhancing the general well-being of the populace.

 GUIDED POLICIES

In response to the recent political and trade liberalization programmes at the Federal level, the ministry has set up several policies designed to create the enabling environment for entrepreneurship to thrive.

Some of the guided policies governing both the private and public sectors include:
• Privatization: Government retention of not more than 20% shareholding in any of its commercially oriented enterprises.
• Establishing Industrial Estates: Government allocation of plots to both local and foreign investors.
• Venture Feasibility: Preparing and making available to entrepreneurs feasibility studies and project profiles.
• Entrepreneurship Development: Embarking on skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programmes for youths.
• SME Funding: Providing soft loans to unemployed and self-employed university graduates as well as capital investment in the establishment of Small and Medium Scale enterprises.
• Loan Provision: Providing loan to industrialists through the loan guarantee scheme
