Udu Local Government, headquartered in Otor-Udu, is a suburb of the Warri Metropolis. It is surrounded by a network of rivers and wetlands which feed its lush vegetation all year round. Udu is blessed with an abundance of natural resources such as rubber, oil palm, cassava, maize, fruits and vegetables; providing a ready source of income for its roughly 100,000 inhabitants.
The villages that makes up of the present Udu local government area are historically grouped into three sub-clans, namely:
- Evwrirhe Sub-clan:- Made up of Aladja, Ovwian, Emadadja, Egini, Obubu, Ubogo, Oleri, Otor-Udu, Ogbe-Udu, Ukpiovwin, Ukperheren, Ayama, Ekrota, Ugbisi, Owhrode, Ekete Oboto, Ekete Uburhie, Okolo Uburhie, Okolo Oboto, Ovworhokpokpo, Erhiephiho, Egiegi, Epame, Ujevwu, Oghior and Ohwase communities.
- Oniere Sub-clan:- Orhowhorun, Igbogidi, and DSC (Delta Steel Company) Township.
- Uheredjo Sub-clan:- These are Opete, Okpaka and Enerhen communities.
Udu Local Government is the site of the Delta Steel Plant, Africa’s first Direct Steel Reduction plant; a Shell Gas Plant and a host of other industrial engineering facilities.
