Delta State Sport Ambassadors

The 2012 Olympics to be hosted by the United Kingdom in London, England is an irresistible attraction for sport enthusiasts world-wide. Nigeria is also not left out of the Olympic fever with 78 athletes representing us in the competition this year. It is particularly interesting to note that 12 out of the 78 athletes representing our country hail from Delta State, making Delta the largest single supplier of athletic talent for this year’s expedition.

Delta state has a rich history of spawning Nigeria’s sport ambassadors. This is made evident by our consistently impressive showing at every major National and International Sport event. The laurels and acclaim won by our sports men and women proves their worth and prowess as exceptional athletes and justifies the quality of sports facilities and equipment provided by the sports loving Delta State government for competitive training purposes.

A few of the incredibly talented individuals that will be representing Delta state at the olympics include:

Blessing Okagbare

Born: 9th October, 1988
Origins: Sapele, Delta State
Features: 1.80m / 60kg
Specialties: 100m, 200m, Long Jump and Triple Jump

Blessing Okagbare is a talented sprinter and jumper, who has had a distinguished career since her May 2007 international big league debut in the All Africa Games Trials in Lagos where she won both the long and triple jump, setting a new triple jump record of 14.13 metres.

The impressive 24 year old started jumping in 2004, when she won medals in both long jump and high jump as a Junior athlete for Delta State at the 2004 National Secondary Schools Games in Owerri, Imo State, and a again at the 14th National Sports Festival held in Abuja for the triple jump.

Her sprinting career started in 2009 after posting 11.21 seconds in her first competitive 100 metres race at a track meet in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has since won several accolades and taken part in several international events during her illustrious career.

Some of her main achievements include the following

•    First woman to win NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) titles in the long jump and 100 meters at the same championship.
•    Finalist for the prestigious Bowerman award – the highest honour given to collegiate track and field student-athletes by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
•    Indoor Titles in the 60metres and Long Jump
•    IAAF Junior and World Championships


Stanley Gbagbeke

Born: 24th July, 1989
Origins: Oginibo, Delta State
Features: 1.83m / 70kg
Specialties: Long Jump, 200 metres sprint


Stanley Avwarosuoghene Gbagbeke hails from Oginibo in Ughelli South LGA of Delta state. Born to school teachers Mr and Mrs Jo Gbagbeke, he displayed an affinity for athletics from his early years being particularly fond of track and soccer in high school. He achieved major acclaim as a long jumper and sprinter in 2008 competing in events like the Sun Belt Championships, Rod Mc.Gravy Memorial, Boston Moon Classic, Kentucky Invitational and other NCAA sponsored competitions.

He has a distinguished professional career with a personal best of 8.15 outdoor and 7.75 obtained in Nashville and Murfreesboro Tennessee both in the long jump. Among his noteworthy achievements include his outings at the 17th All Africa Gamesin Nairobi and the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin.


Ogho-Oghene Egwero

Born: 26th November, 1988
Origins: Egbo Igbide, Delta State
Specialties: 100 metre Sprint

Known to many as the fastest man in Nigeria, Ogho-Oghene Egwero is a proud son of Delta State from Egbo-Igbidie in the Isoko South LGA.
He is a sportsman of impressive prowess and acclaim with a personal outdoor best of 10.06 and 21.72 secs in the 100 and 200metre races respectively. He also as a personal indoor best of 6.62.seconds in the 60m dash, which he obtained in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Currently ranked 47th in the World Men’s 100m category, Ogho-Oghene Egwero as participated in many national and international events and has won accolades which include:
•    12th and 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics
•    17th All African Games Championship
•    2011 Athletics Federation of Nigeria Golden League
